Message from the Fire Chief

The Dixon Fire Department is honored to provide fire, rescue, and emergency medical advanced life support services to our community members within the City of Dixon and the Dixon Fire Protection District. The Dixon fire department jurisdiction is the largest within Solano County, and encompasses approximately 320 square miles, serving a permanent population of approximately 19,000, as thousands of travelers and products are transported through our jurisdiction each day, along Interstate 80 and other state highways. We respond both engine companies, from one fire station, to approximately 2800 calls for service each year.

Your fire department is comprised of 24 highly trained employees, and utilizes approximately 15 reserve personnel in an effort to provide services to our community. We staff two (2) fire engines for fire and advanced EMS response, with a minimum of 5 personnel each day, and we cross-staff a variety of specialized equipment, including: wildland fire engines, water tenders, a ladder truck. Regionally, your fire personnel participate in the Solano County Hazardous Materials Team and Urban Search and Rescue Team. Several of your firefighters are certified State Fire Instructors and/or Adjunct Faculty and contribute to in-service training and career development of personnel. We host the Solano Community College Firefighter I Academy at your fire station, from January through May each year, and utilize some of those graduates in our Reserve Firefighter Program. This specialized career development program provides entry-level work experience to those students, and many are hired by other local fire agencies. Dixon Fire Department hired one individual this year from this reserve program, too.

As we enter 2018, we are encouraged by a supportive City Council and City staff. The rebounding economy and increasing revenues are good indicators for the community services provided by your dedicated City staff and fire personnel. We anticipate our operations to receive an increase of calls for service, particularly in emergency medical response. We are beginning to perform more fire prevention inspections, as we work together to provide a safer community. Compliance with state-mandated fire inspections is a high priority. Training proficiency and compliance will continue to be addressed and helps us ensure that those of us that serve you, will do so in the safest, most efficient manner possible with what we have. We will look for additional ways to increase services, within a financially responsible manner. We are seeking input from employees through strategic planning discussions, and interested in developing more community fire volunteer opportunities with our organization to better serve you – and to provide a way for you to serve your community!

I am honored to be your Fire Chief, and I am proud of the services provided to the Dixon community by the members of the Dixon Professional Firefighters, Local 4665. We appreciate your support and commitment to us.

Thank you,
Jay Bushrow, Fire Chief
