 Dixon Fire Department
 Cal Fire    Safe and Sane

In 2011, the Dixon City Council voted to approve the sale, possession, and usage of "safe and sane" fireworks within the Dixon city limits. This is an exciting time for the community, as fireworks have not been allowed in Dixon in several years. The use of fireworks is also a concerning time for the Dixon Fire Department. There is cited evidence that fireworks, while of an approved type and used correctly, still are responsible for numerous fires and injuries each year. These incidents have cost millions of dollars in property damage, physical injury, and emotional trauma over the years. While each incident is unfortunate, a great deal of the fires and injuries are preventable by recognizing and implementing good safety practices. This page will provide information and links to better prepare you for the upcoming Independence Day celebration, and will hopefully allow you to enjoy the 4th of July safely and sanely.

Safety tips from the Office of the Sate Fire Marshal:

• Buy only State Fire Marshal-approved (Safe and Sane) fireworks. They must have the State Fire Marshal's seal on them and can only be purchased at licensed fireworks stands
• Always read directions.
• Always have an adult present.
• Use fireworks outdoors only.
• Never use near dry grass or other flammable materials.
• Light one at a time.
• Use common sense and keep a safe distance.
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
• Never experiment with fireworks.
• Have a bucket of water and a hose handy.
• Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks.
• Do not wear loose fitting clothing.
• Never carry fireworks in your pockets.
• Fireworks are not toys
• Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks.

- Look for the seal of the California State Fire Marshal and the words, "Safe. . . Sane," on each piece of fireworks, as well as on the packaging. This means that they have been listed as safe for use (in accordance with all manufacturer's instructions) in the State of California where local laws permit their sale and use.

- Fireworks that explode, shoot through the air, move along the ground, including skyrockets, bottle rockets, firecrackers of all types, Roman candles, etc., have always been illegal in California. Penalties for those caught storing, selling, or using these types of fireworks can include a fine of $1,000 and/or one year in jail.

- Many illegal fireworks have wording such as "D.O.T. approved," etc. Don't be misled by these phrases; they do NOT make such fireworks legal in California. If the seal of the State Fire Marshal and the words, "Safe. . .Sane," do not appear on fireworks, they should not be used.
